What’s New with Spider-Man

Published September 2019

In recent weeks, Spider-Man fans have been abuzz about all of the rumors and new information circulating regarding upcoming films and video games starring everyone’s favorite wall crawler. “Spider-Man: Far from Home” was released on July 2, 2019, and left Marvel fans longing to know what happens to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) after Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) exposes his secret identity to the public via cameo by J.K. Simmons reprising his role as the infamous J. Jonah Jameson, head of the Daily Bugle. Since that bombshell of an end-credit scene was released, there have been no more MCU movies premiere due to most new films being delayed because of the pandemic. This extreme deficit of MCU content has caused fans to begin to spiral with theories about what comes next for Spider-Man within the

One of theories circulating the most right now is how the next Spider-Man movie will be exploring the multiverse in a highly demanded Spider-verse movie. The most recent, and probably most popular, adaptation of the Spider-verse is the 2018 animated movie “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” The basic premise of any Spider-Verse story is this: Something big happens, usually caused by a villain of the story’s main Spider-Man, that tears a hole in the multiverse allowing villains from other universes to invade which in return forces the Spider-Man equivalents from each universe to work together to save the entire multiverse. One may ask why Spider-Man fans so badly want a live-action adaptation of a Spider-Verse

In the last 18 years there have been 3 big screen live-action adaptations of the web-slinger across 7 Spider-Man solo films. Each reboot of Spider-Man has sparked debates between fans about which Spider-Man is the best. Regardless whether one is a Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland fan, most Spidey fans could agree about wanting to see all 3 in one movie. T

he most recent piece of news to spark the rumors of a possible Spider-Verse movie is the casting of Jamie Foxx as Electro in the next MCU Spider-Man movie. In a now deleted Instagram post, Jamie Foxx himself shares the “shocking” news about his reprisal of Electro in the post captioned, “Tell Spidey let’s run it back!... super excited to part of the new marvel Spider-Man new installment... can’t wait for y’all to check the new one. And I won’t be blue in this one!! But a thousand percent badass!!!” Many fans are skeptical about allowing Jamie Foxx to portray Electro another time since his performance in 2014’s “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” was poorly received.

Andrew Garfield fan and OBU Psychology major, Matthew Musser, says, “I think the character could definitely be redeemed in the new movie. I think Jamie Foxx is an amazing actor and definitely deserves a second chance within the

About the hopes for a cross-over between the Spider-Men Musser says, “Sony has always slacked in the area of continuity when it comes to its Spider-Man properties, so I would love to see them take ownership of their abandoned projects. I think it makes the most sense and is most likely that Tobey would make an appearance, but it would be ‘amazing’ to see Andrew in the MCU, even for just a brief

While Spider-Man fans are left speculating about the titular character’s role in upcoming films, Spidey fans with PlayStations are getting excited for the PS4 exclusive “Spider-Man” game to be remastered, as well as the new “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” game coming out with the release of the PS5 on November 12, 2020. The first Spider-Man game allowed the player to play as Peter Parker and swing around New York City fighting crime and defeat the infamous Sinister Six. The ability to change into many of Spidey’s comic book and movie inspired suits along with easy-to-learn controls and open-world format led many gamers and Spider-Man fans to enjoy the game. IGN.com gave it a score of 8.7/10. Many fans, such as OBU English major Andrew Billimek, are excited for Peter’s new look.

Billimek says, “I’m really happy with the remastered version. I think it looks really good and feels much more polished than the original release.” While the game was so well received, the new, younger redesign of Peter Parker for the remastered edition has received a differing reaction.

Screenrant.com voices their opinion saying, “His new look retcons his age and belies the toll of his journey,” and, “Peter’s fresh face diminishes both his character and his mentoring of Miles.” Screen Rant, and many other players, have similar concerns for Peter looking so much younger now since his original design placed him clearly in his mid-twenties and showed how spending years as Spider-Man has physically affected him, while his new look makes appear much younger and less experienced as a hero.

One of the defining pieces of the story of the first Spider-Man game, was the mentoring/fatherly role Peter took on with young Miles Morales. Towards the end of the game, in similar fashion of Peter’s origin story, Miles gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gains similar abilities to Peter. As Peter Parker, the player gets to walk with Miles as he learns how to use his new abilities. With Miles’ in-game origin stemming from the first game, fans are only more excited for the release of “Spider-Man: Miles Morales” on November 12, 2020.

This will be the first console Spider-Man game featuring someone other than Peter Parker taking on the mantle as Spider-Man. While players are unsure what this means for Peter’s fate within the new game, they are just as excited to get to play as Miles, especially with the overwhelming positive feedback 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” movie featuring Morales received.
